The Carolina Sandhills National Wildlife Refuge is a 45,348-acre (183.52 km 2) national wildlife refuge (NWR) located in Chesterfield County, South Carolina.The refuge is managed by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service from a headquarters located in McBee, South Carolina.
The Carolina Sandhills region is characterized by xeric sand community vegetation dominated by pine trees, [9] [10] [11] which caused it to formerly be known as Carolina and Georgia's Piney Woods. Much of the Carolina Sandhills is known for an ecosystem of longleaf pine ( Pinus palustris ) and wiregrass ( Aristida stricta ).
