An LR105 Atlas sustainer engine on display at the Air Zoo.. The LR105 is a liquid-fuel rocket engine that served as the sustainer engine for the Atlas rocket family. [1] [2] [3] Developed by Rocketdyne in 1957 as the S-4, [4] [5] [6] it is called a sustainer engine because it continues firing after the LR89 booster engines have been jettisoned, providing thrust during the ascent phase.
[2] The RD-0162 rocket engine was developed at the Voronezh KBKhA after 2006, initially with an engine version aimed at 2,000 kN (200 tf) thrust, and later, after 2012, a smaller version with a thrust of 416 kN (42.4 tf) in the RD-0162SD version. Engine development funding was included in the Russian Federal Space Program for 2016–2025.
After 70 seconds, the rocket engine cut out and the spacecraft coasted to its peak altitude. SpaceShipTwo's crew cabin was 3.7 m (12 ft) long and 2.3 m (7 ft 7 in) in diameter. [29] The wing span was 8.2 m (27 ft), the length was 18 m (59 ft) and the tail height was 4.6 m (15 ft). [30]
