António Manuel de Oliveira Guterres GCC GCL (/ ɡ ʊ ˈ t ɛr ə s / ⓘ; European Portuguese: [ɐ̃ˈtɔnju ɣuˈtɛʁɨʃ] ⓘ; born 30 April 1949) [2] is a Portuguese politician and diplomat who is serving as the ninth and current secretary-general of the United Nations since 2017.

António Guterres was appointed by the General Assembly on 13 October 2016 to be the successor of Ban Ki-moon as he exited on 31 December 2016. [6] He was widely considered to be a potential candidate for the 2017 South Korean presidential election, [7] before announcing, on 1 February, that he would not be running. [8]
In order to be eligible for selection, a candidate must be nominated by at least one member state. [8] [9] On June 8, the day the Security Council convened to recommend a candidate to the General Assembly, there was only one official candidate in the selection process (incumbent Antonio Guterres), and seven additional self-declared applicant candidates.
