Watervale was originally platted, and houses constructed, in the 189s by Leo F. Hale, who began logging operations in the area. Hale went bankrupt by 1900, but in 1917, Oscar H. Kraft of Chicago purchased the town and adjacent land to use as a resort. Kraft and his family have operated Watervale as a resort since that time.
The Iron River Creamery was founded in 1913 by Henry H. Frailing and quickly outgrew the original building. Frailing built this new, larger creamery building in 1920. Portage Point Inn Complex is a resort hotel located at the western end of Portage Lake at Portage Point, Michigan. In October 1985, this 1902 resort hotel and its associated buildings was added to the National Register of Historic Places. [1] It operates today as the Portage Point Resort.
