Watervale was originally platted, and houses constructed, in the 189s by Leo F. Hale, who began logging operations in the area. Hale went bankrupt by 1900, but in 1917, Oscar H. Kraft of Chicago purchased the town and adjacent land to use as a resort. Kraft and his family have operated Watervale as a resort since that time.

They ran the inn until 1924, when it was destroyed by fire. Rather than construct a new building, they modified the 1912 dance hall that Jacob Schwarz had constructed previously. [2] The building was moved to face the river, an upper story was added, and the interior was reworked to make a new inn. Blanche and Anna ran the inn until 1957.
The complex's redevelopment into River Place included the conversion of the Research Laboratory to a hotel, known as the River Place Inn at its opening, [7] designed by firm Sims–Varner. [8] Bruning Development Corp purchased the hotel from the Stroh family in 1993, and signed Grand Heritage Hotels to manage and brand the property.

The Watervale Historic District is a resort, originally constructed as a lumber camp, located at 975-1422 Watervale Road on the shore of Lower Herring Lake in Blaine Township, Michigan. It was designated a Michigan State Historic Site in 1991 [2] and listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2003. [1]
