Franck’s masterpieces, including the Piano Quintet F minor (1879), the Violin Sonata A major (1886), and this quartet, were written in the third period (1876–1890). Since his next chamber work, the second violin sonata, was unfinished at the time of his death in 1890, this string quartet is his last completed chamber work.
