The term tattoo derives from a 17th-century Dutch phrase doe den tap toe ("turn off the tap") a signal to tavern owners each night, played by a regiment's Corps of Drums, to turn off the taps of their ale kegs so that the soldiers would retire to their billeted lodgings at a reasonable hour. The original concept of this call was played on the snare drum and was known as "tap-too", with the same rule applying. Later on, the name was applied to more elaborate military performances, known as military tattoos.

The biannual Hamina Tattoo in Finland is the official military tattoo event of the Finnish Defense Forces. The National Military Tattoo in the Rotterdam Ahoy indoor stadium, held since 1948, is the official military tattoo of the Armed forces of the Netherlands. It was formerly held in Delft and Breda before moving to Rotterdam in 2006.
The event takes forms part of the wider Edinburgh Festival. The principal military band for the 2009 Tattoo was provided by the Royal Air Force under the event's Principal Director of Music, Squadron Leader Duncan Stubbs, with other bands and musicians including those from Switzerland and Tonga.
