Amata Catherine Coleman Radewagen (/ ə ˈ m ɑː t ə, ˈ r æ d ə ˌ w æ ɡ ə n / ə-MAH-tə RAD-ə-WAG-ən; born December 29, 1947), commonly called Aumua Amata (/ aʊ ˈ m uː ə / ow-MOO-ə), is an American Samoan politician who is the current delegate for the United States House of Representatives from American Samoa.
Pula was born in American Samoa. [2] He is the youngest son of 12 children and his father was the first Samoan Director of Education. [3] [4] He grew up in the village of Utulei and attended Utulei elementary school. [2] He later attended Marist Brothers High School where he graduated in 1974 and was the class valedictorian. [2]
She is the first woman to represent American Samoa in the U.S. House of Representatives. [5] [6] She is also the first Republican representative in Congress from American Samoa. In 2018, she won reelection with 83.3 percent of the vote, [7] the highest number of votes in American Samoa history.
Reid has been actively involved in the American Samoa Democratic Party since 2016. He was the first American Samoan to intern at the Democratic National Headquarters in Washington D.C. in 2009. He has been an American Samoa delegate for Barack Obama in 2012, Hillary Clinton in 2016, Joe Biden in 2020, and a super delegate for Kamala Harris in 2024.
Since 2013, he has been a voting member of the Sanctuary Advisory Council for the National Marine Sanctuary of American Samoa. [10] In 2020, he was elected to the position in the 2020 American Samoan general election against Penieli Baker and Bert Thompson.
