Today, with 600 channels in the UK today, the Internet offers different formats and possibilities for TV listings and television is starting to appear in both mobile and internet formats, so the whole approach to TV listings is changing. In addition, most UK newspapers publish a full week's listings guide in their Saturday and Sunday editions.
UKTV is a commercial broadcaster owned by BBC Studios, one of the BBC's commercial units. Originating in 1992 with UK Gold, UKTV expanded its channels from 1997 onwards, with the BBC taking full ownership in June 2019. Unlike the BBC's public service channels, the UKTV channels contain advertising.
A breakdown is impossible due to a) the number of platforms, b) duplication of services, c) regional services, d) part time operations, and e) audio. For the Sky platform alone, there were 485 TV stations, additionally 57 "timeshifted versions", 36 HDTV versions, 42 regional TV options, 81 audio channels, and 5 promotion channels as of mid-2010.
July. 1 July – The long-lived "Wings" set makes its debut on the Channel 4 game show Countdown, alongside the use of tie-break conundrums. 13 July – Bernard Wenton, performing as Nat King Cole, wins the second series of Stars in Their Eyes on ITV. 14 July – Sue Lawrence wins the 1991 series of MasterChef on BBC1.
TV-am recommences broadcasts each day from 6am. This is the first time since its launch in 1983 that they have transmitted throughout their allocated broadcast hours. ITV launches a full morning schedule with advertising for the first time. The new service includes regular five-minute national and regional news bulletins.
December. 2 December – 10.2 million viewers see a classic comedy scene from the Only Fools and Horses episode "A Touch of Glass" in which the Trotters accidentally smash a priceless chandelier. 23 December – Service Information is broadcast on BBC2 for the final time.
25 June – The final episode of BBC One's The Human Body is the first British television programme to show the final moments of a cancer patient. 63-year-old Herbert Mower, who died the previous year, had given permission for his death to be recorded for the series. 21 October – The US soap Melrose Place makes its UK debut on Sky One. 24 October – The fictional character Mr Blobby makes his debut in the 'Gotcha' segment of Noel's House Party on BBC1. 29 October – The video game magazine show Bad Influence! makes its debut on ITV, hosted by Andy Crane and Violet Berlin. 31 October.
