On Meathside, the Castle of Drogheda or The Castle of Comfort was a tower house castle on the south side of the Bull Ring. It served as a prison, and as a sitting of the Irish parliament in 1494. [14] The earliest known town charter is that granted to Drogheda-in-Meath by Walter de Lacy in 1194. [15]

The Dublin and Drogheda Railway first constructed a branch from the Dublin-Belfast main line through Navan to the town of Oldcastle which opened in 1850. In 1858, the Dublin and Meath Railway was authorised to construct a branch from Clonsilla to Navan off the MGWR main line to Sligo , which was opened in 1862.
Desmond was buried at St. Peter's Church, Drogheda, then afterwards removed to Christ Church Cathedral, Dublin.
