Peters chose Béla's wife Márta Károlyi to serve as assistant national coach. Béla Károlyi told the United States Gymnastics Federation that he would not attend the 1988 Seoul Olympic Games unless he was the team coach. [11] At the 1988 Olympic Trials in August, Károlyi's gymnasts earned 5 of the top 8 spots.

Uchida had been the head judo coach at San Jose State University for over 70 years, and had played a leading part in the development of the university's judo program. [1] [2] His brother George Uchida was the 1972 US Olympic judo coach. He turned 100 in April 2020, [3] and died on June 27, 2024, at the age of 104. [4]
