Lothar Collatz (German:; July 6, 1910 – September 26, 1990) was a German mathematician, born in Arnsberg, Westphalia. The "3x + 1" problem is also known as the Collatz conjecture, named after him and still unsolved. The Collatz–Wielandt formula for the Perron–Frobenius eigenvalue of a positive square matrix was also named after him.
The most-common visualization of the Recamán's sequence is simply plotting its values, such as the figure at right. On January 14, 2018, the Numberphile YouTube channel published a video titled The Slightly Spooky Recamán Sequence , [ 3 ] showing a visualization using alternating semi-circles, as it is shown in the figure at top of this page.

In the original Collatz sequence, the successor of n is either n / 2 (for even n) or 3n + 1 (for odd n).
