Graphic Arts Institute was established in 1967 in Dhaka, East Pakistan by Muhammad Azam Khan, the governor general of East Pakistan and Waqar Ahmed, Director General of Technical Education Directorate. The first head of the institute was the South Dakota University trained R. K. Mollah.
Dhaka Polytechnic Institute (Bengali: ঢাকা পলিটেকনিক ইনস্টিটিউট, also known as DPI) is a government technical institute in Dhaka, Bangladesh. It is the largest and the oldest polytechnic academia in modern Bangladesh .
In 1984, the college was nationalized and the word government added to the name. [6] In September 2005, the president of the college unit of the Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal was gunned down in the college. [7] Government Shaheed Suhrawardy College is one of seven affiliated colleges under the University of Dhaka since 2017.

The institute operates under the executive control of the Ministry of Education (MOE) acting through the Directorate of Technical Education (DTE). [1] The academic programmes, and curricula are maintained under the regulation of the Bangladesh Technical Education Board (BTEB). [2]
In 1981, with the opening of a separate Engineering College (Presently Dhaka University of Engineering) on the campus of TTTC it suffered a break in its activities. TTTC was reborn in 1986 with renewed philosophy and naturally with activities in tune with modern trends in the arena of training technical teachers internationally.
