In 1863 the Caledonian Railway bought out Buccleuch's share of the line. There was a gas works at Granton and it had a passenger station, the Granton Gasworks railway station, for the use of gas works employees only; a passenger service was provided by the Caledonian to and from Princes Street. It opened in 1902 and closed in 1942.

In 1923 the railways of Great Britain were "grouped" under the Railways Act 1921 and the Caledonian Railway was a constituent of the newly formed London Midland and Scottish Railway; its capitalisation at that time was £57 million (equivalent to £4.11 billion today), [4] and it had a single-track mileage of 2,827 miles (4,550 km).
The Edinburgh section runs from Carstairs to Edinburgh Waverley station; the final section of the original line to Princes Street was closed and trains diverted to Waverley. The route is now the northern section of the West Coast Main Line , and carries a heavy passenger and freight service.

From 1849 to 1869 the Caledonian Railway provided a service from Edinburgh (Lothian Road) to Glasgow (Buchanan Street), by way of Carstairs, Coatbridge and Stepps, although this was a somewhat circuitous route compared to the rival Edinburgh and Glasgow Railway line via Falkirk High.
