Murphysboro is a city in and the county seat of Jackson County, Illinois, United States. [3] The population was 7,093 at the 2020 census . The city is part of the Metro Lakeland area.
The restaurant was founded by Leon Finney Sr., originally of Mississippi, in 1940. [1] It was one of the earliest barbecue establishments in Chicago. Along with other restaurants like Lem's Bar-B-Q, Leon's popularized the "Delta style" of barbecue that predominates in the South Side.
In 2018, Lem's sent a cease and desist letter to Chicago Brewhouse, when the brewhouse listed "Lem's BBQ Sauce" as the sauce served with its rib tips. [ 4 ] James Lemons, who eventually became Lem's owner and the last brother to remain working at the business, died at age 87 in 2015. [ 1 ]

The Jackson County Courthouse, located at 1001 Walnut St. in Murphysboro, is the county courthouse serving Jackson County, Illinois. Built in 1927, the courthouse was the fourth built by the county and the third in Murphysboro. Architect Nelson Strong Spencer designed the courthouse in a mix of the Classical Revival and Beaux-Arts styles.
