Duke's father, Washington, had owned a tobacco company that his sons James and Benjamin (1855–1929) took over in the 1880s. Karla Francesca Holloway (née Clapp; September 29, 1949) is an American academic. [1] She is James B. Duke Professor of English & Professor of Law at Duke University, and holds appointments in the Duke University School of Law as well as the university's Department of English, Department of African & African American Studies, and Program in Women's Studies.
In 1998, she won Duke's University Teacher of the Year Award and in 2008 she won the Dean's Award for Excellence in Mentoring of Graduate Students. [3] In 2014 she gave the British Academy's Master-Mind Lecture. [4] She is a member of the Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters. [5]
