   I actually hit "select all" (control A), "copy" (control C), then opened a Word doc. In Word doc, I hit "paste" (control v) In Word doc, under "review" hit "word count". hope this helps. Good answer presuming you have Word. Never heard of a translator who didn't have Word.

   I can copy them out of one file (the PDF) and paste them into another (Word). this is what I get in the console when I run the script on a simple file: 1184 words. I Select All > Copy, open Word, Paste, run a word count and get: 991 words. 5,623 characters with spaces, 4,803 characters without spaces, or approximately 780 spaces.
