The Maruti Suzuki Gypsy is a four-wheel-drive vehicle based on the long wheelbase Suzuki Jimny SJ40/410 series. It was being built at the Maruti Suzuki's Gurgaon, India plant since 1985. It was primarily built as an off-road vehicle and all models were built with selectable 4WD.
Production begins on a second generation of 4x4 utility vehicles with 1-liter engines; the SJ410 is designed for export and sold as the Suzuki Samurai in Canada, and as the Jimny 1000 in some markets.

It seems that some mention should be made of the Samurai rollover problems, which led Consumer Reports to rate the car "unacceptable", and contributed to its withdrawal from the US market.
