The Tigers have three national championship titles ( 1981, 2016 and 2018) along with two other national championship appearances in 2015 and 2019. Clemson sponsors teams in nine men's and twelve women's NCAA sanctioned sports. The first intercollegiate match in Clemson history was a baseball game on April 24, 1896, against Furman. The school's first football team followed that fall. Five women's sports were introduced in 1975 after the passage of Title IX.
On July 23, 2002, in celebration of the Atlantic Coast Conference's 50th Anniversary, a 120-member blue ribbon committee selected the Top 50 football players in ACC history. Clemson led all conference schools with the most players selected to the Golden Anniversary team. Each of Clemson's honorees are All-Americans and former NFL players.
