The Amhara Region (Amharic: አማራ ክልል, romanized: Åmara Kilil), officially the Amhara National Regional State (Amharic: የአማራ ብሔራዊ ክልላዊ መንግሥት), [2] is a regional state in northern Ethiopia and the homeland of the Amhara, Awi, Xamir, Argobba, and Qemant people.
Debre Birhan was founded by Emperor Zara Yaqob, in response to a miraculous light that was seen in the sky at the time. Believing this was a sign from God showing his approval for the death by stoning of a group of heretics 38 days before, the emperor ordered a church built on the site, and later constructed an extensive palace nearby, and a second church, dedicated to Saint Cyriacus.
Since the 1990s, the city grew as an industrial zone, received numerous investments, and became the capital of Amhara Region. [ 19 ] On 6–9 February 2007, the city hosted a National Investment Bazaar and Trade Fair to honor Millennium celebrations. [ 20 ]
The highest-ranking court, the Amhara Supreme Court, is Amhara's "court of last resort". A seven-justice panel composes the court, which, by its own discretion, hears appeals from the courts of appeals, and retains original jurisdiction over limited matters. The chief judge is called the President of Amhara Supreme Court (Yeneneh Simegn).
Oromia Zone is bordered on the southwest by North Shewa Zone, on the northwest by South Wollo and Argobba special woreda, and on the east by the Afar Region. The Zone consists of 7 Woredas which are Artuma Fursi, Bati, Bati Town, Dewa Cheffa, Dewa Harewa, Jilye Tumuga and Kemisie town. Kemise is the administrative center of the Zone.
The town is also a seat of one of the most populous Woreda in Amhara region, Mecha Woreda, having a total population of 292,250 in 2005 Census (and estimated to 340,289 in 2015 [6]). Majority of the inhabitants (98.91%) practiced Ethiopian Orthodox Christianity. The 1994 national census reported a total population of 12,278.
