McIntosh was described in 1913 as "not only the oldest but largest inland boot and shoe jobbing house in [New England]." The former Springfield Safe Deposit and Trust Company is located in downtown Springfield, occupying a parcel that fronts on State Street between Willow and Main Streets, which extends all the way back to Stockbridge Street. The building is four stories in height, with a steel frame finished in a combination of stone, concrete, and brick.
On the west it is roughly bounded by Armory and Magazine Streets, and on the east by Monmouth, Clifford, Bay, and Marion Streets. A portion of the neighborhood, encompassing some 130 acres (53 ha) and 350 homes, was designated a historic district and listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1976.
