On 25 March 1882 the club won through to the final of the FA Cup against the Old Etonians. Blackburn Rovers was the first provincial team to reach the final, [10] but the result was a 1–0 defeat by the Old Etonians. [11] Rovers finally won the FA Cup on 29 March 1884 with a 2–1 victory over the Scottish team Queen's Park. [12]

This feat was also achieved first by Wanderers FC with wins in 1876, 1877 and 1878, but Wanderers were dissolved in 1887, having not reached a single final since 1878 despite that win meaning they won 5 of the first 7 FA Cup seasons.
