Route numbers have been allocated to South Australia's roads since 1955, with the introduction of National Routes across all states and territories in Australia, symbolised by a white shield with black writing; National Route 1 ('Highway 1') was one of the best-known numbered national routes, due to its fame for circumnavigating the continent.
All roads within the Highway 1 system are allocated a road route numbered M1, A1, B1 or R1, depending on the state route numbering system. The Adelaide end of South Eastern Freeway leads downhill to traffic lights at the intersection of Glen Osmond Road which continues northwest as route number A1 into the Adelaide city centre, Portrush Road north to bypass the city and towards Port Adelaide, and Cross Road which leads west towards the southern suburbs of Adelaide.
The Inner Ring Route is adjacent to the outer edge of the Adelaide Park Lands except on the western side between Anzac Highway and Port Road where railway lines occupy the space along the parklands, and the road ring route is further out. The earlier A21 route using West Terrace passed inside the ring of parklands instead.
