Cowan Mill (also known as the Aurora Mill or Cowan Woolen Company Mill) was a historic mill at Island Mill Street in Lewiston, Maine. The 4-story Greek Revival mill was built in 1850 on the site of Lewiston's first textile mill (built by John A. Briggs in 1836 and destroyed by fire in March 1850). David Cowan was twice elected mayor of Lewiston.

The Lewiston Water Power Company was founded about 1850 by a group of investors from Boston, Massachusetts, seeking to capitalize on the water power of the falls on the Androscoggin River between Lewiston and Auburn. The company built a series of power canals, and built cotton spinning and weaving mills along their banks.
Lewiston was a slow but steadily growing farm town throughout its early history. By the early-to-mid-19th century, however, as water power was being honed, Lewiston's location on the Androscoggin River would prove to make it a perfect location for emerging industry. [ 12 ]
