Milton Township is located in the southwestern corner of Cass County and is bordered by Berrien County to the west and the state of Indiana to the south. The city of Niles, Michigan, is 5 miles (8 km) to the northwest, and South Bend, Indiana, is 10 miles (16 km) to the south.
Cass County had been originally organized by an act of the Michigan Territorial Council on November 4, 1829, as four townships while Lewis Cass was the territorial governor.
