The Cosworth Vega engine was produced in 1975 and 1976 using the 2300 engine block. The engine was de-stroked to 3.16 inches (80 mm) giving 2.0 L; 121.7 cu in (1,994 cc), with a 16-valve aluminum cylinder head, double overhead cams , forged components and solid lifters. Heads used on the high performance 409 and 427 engines had larger ports and valves than those used on the 348 and the base 409 passenger car and truck engines, but externally were identical to the standard units – but for the location of the engine oil dipstick, on the driver's side on the 348 and the passenger's on the 409/427.
The LT1 uses a new engine block, cylinder head, timing cover, water pump, intake manifold and accessory brackets. The harmonic damper also does not interchange; it is a unique damper/pulley assembly. Engine mounts and bell housing bolt pattern remain the same, permitting a newer engine to be readily swapped into an older vehicle.
