Zumwalt Prairie is a grassland area located in Wallowa County in northeast Oregon, United States. Measuring 330,000 acres (130,000 ha), much of the land is used for agriculture, with some portions protected as the Zumwalt Prairie Preserve owned by The Nature Conservancy. [1] Part of that portion is designated as a National Natural Landmark.

The name of the town came from Henry Zumwalt, an early resident of the area. The Zumwalt post office was established on August 25, 1903, and Josie Zumwalt was the first postmaster. [2] Henry Oliver Zumwalt was born on June 5, 1854, in Perrydale, Polk County, Oregon. He married Mary Angeline Updegraff on Aug 1881 in Wasco County, Oregon.

After enrolling in Oregon State University to earn a master's in biology, she studied raptors on Zumwalt Prairie for the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, an experience she documented in her 1995 book The Prairie Keepers: Secrets of the Zumwalt.
