Norman B. Leventhal (August 30, 1917 – April 5, 2015) was an American businessman, the chairman of The Beacon Companies, a developer and manager of office buildings, housing, and hotels. Leventhal was best known for his work in civic improvements to the city of Boston, and consequently had a park named after him of which he oversaw the creation.
The center manages the geographic collections of the Boston Public Library as well as material collected by Norman B. Leventhal during his lifetime, known as the Mapping Boston Collection. Its holdings stretch chronologically from the 15th century to the present, and geographically cover the world, with a focus on Boston and New England.

Leventhal and his wife, Sherry, are philanthropists, [13] who operate the Sherry and Alan Leventhal Family Foundation. [14] They made a $5 million donation to Boston University. [3] Moreover, his family has given $10 million to the Boston Public Library for the creation of the Norman B. Leventhal Map Center. [15]
