Merthyr Tydfil [a] (Welsh: Merthyr Tudful) [b] is the main town in Merthyr Tydfil County Borough, Wales, administered by Merthyr Tydfil County Borough Council. It is about 23 miles (37 km) north of Cardiff .
The town has a promenade, castle and university and is the home of the National Library of Wales, Aberystwyth Arts Centre and Vale of Rheidol Railway. The town was once home to a fully professional Football League club, Merthyr Town F.C., which folded in the 1930s and Merthyr Tydfil AFC were founded in 1945. The year of 2008 marked the centenary of football having been played at Penydarren Park (1908 – 2008).
Town is an electoral ward which elects four councillors to Merthyr Tydfil County Borough Council. At the May 2017 elections Town elected three Independent councillors (John Thomas, Kevin O'Neill, Andrew Barry) topped the poll, with the fourth councillor from the Labour Party (Dai Jones). [ 3 ]
