Efforts came to fruition in September 1996 when the current Naugatuck Railroad commenced a tourist scenic train over the 19.6 miles (31.5 km) of the Naugatuck Railroad's right-of-way that had opened for service in September 1849. [2] The railroad is headquartered at Thomaston station, built in 1881 and last used by passengers in 1958.
The Thomaston Dam flood control project constructed by the Army Corps of Engineers required roughly 8 miles (13 km) of track to be relocated between 1959 and 1960. The new construction begins just north of Thomaston station and returns to the original alignment near East Litchfield. Tracks between Torrington and Winsted were abandoned in 1963.
Harwinton Fair attendees would take the train to and from East Litchfield where they would catch the shuttle to the Fair Grounds. In 1849 the Naugatuck Valley Railroad extended their rails to Winsted, Connecticut. A depot was built in East Litchfield. Passengers could ride all the way to New York City without changing trains.
