The barracks is part of the Holsworthy military reserve, which is 22,000 ha (54,000-acre) training area and artillery range for the Australian Army, established in the 1880s and been in active use since World War I. Following World War II, it became a major base for the permanent component of the Australian Army in New South Wales.

Of its constituent schools, two – the School of Artillery [6] and the School of Armour [8] – are co-located with HQ CATC at Puckapunyal, while the School of Infantry is located at Lone Pine Barracks at Singleton, New South Wales, [9] and the School of Military Engineering is located at Holsworthy Barracks in the Liverpool Military Area. It was situated adjacent to Holsworthy Barracks in the Liverpool Military Area. In the Federal government's 2010–11 Budget it was announced that $35.2 million would be spent over two years to move SME to Holsworthy. [4] The move is scheduled to take place in 2014, after which the site will be turned into the Moorebank Intermodal Terminal. [1]
