Rita of Cascia, OSA (born Margherita Ferri Lotti; 1381 – 22 May 1457), was an Italian widow and Augustinian nun.After Rita's husband died, she joined a small community of nuns, who later became Augustinians, where she was known both for practicing mortification of the flesh [1] and for the efficacy of her prayers.
The rose is thought to represent God's love for Rita and Rita's ability to intercede on behalf of lost causes or impossible cases. Rita is often depicted holding roses or with roses nearby, and on her feast day, the churches and shrines of Saint Rita provide roses to the congregation that are blessed by priests during Mass.

The St. Rita's Colored Catholic Mission is a historic building in New Smyrna Beach, Florida, United States. Built in 1899 as Sacred Heart Catholic Church on Faulkner Street, it was relocated to 314 Duss Street in 1956 to serve as a Catholic Mission to the African-American community. [2] Today, it is the Mary S. Harrell Black Heritage Museum. [3]
