Mandalay (/ ˌ m æ n d ə ˈ l eɪ / or / ˈ m æ n d əl eɪ /; Burmese: မန္တလေး; MLCTS: manta.le:) is the second-largest city in Myanmar, after Yangon.Located on the east bank of the Irrawaddy River, 631 km (392 miles; road distance) north of Yangon, the city has a population of 1,225,553 (2014 census).
Mandalay Palace was the primary royal residence of King Mindon and King Thibaw, the last two kings of the country. The complex ceased to be a royal residence and seat of government on 28 November 1885 when, during the Third Anglo-Burmese War , troops of the Burma Field Force entered the palace and captured the royal family.

A Gurkha battalion (4/4th Gurkha Rifles), commanded by an officer who had served in Mandalay before the war, stormed Mandalay Hill on the night of 8 March. Several Japanese held out in tunnels and bunkers underneath the pagodas, and were slowly eliminated over the next few days, although most of the buildings survived substantially intact.
Mandalay District (Burmese: မန္တလေး ခရိုင်) was a district of the Mandalay Region in central Myanmar. Though the district used to consist of two cities, Mandalay and Amarapura , today, with the urban sprawl of Mandalay capturing Amarapura and Patheingyi , the district and the city of Mandalay are one and the same.
