Banco Santander (México) S.A. was founded on November 16, 1932, under the name Banco Mexicano. In 1955 Sociedad Mexicana de Crédito Industrial (Banco Somex) purchased a controlling interests of the bank. In 1958 Banco Mexicano merged with Banco Español. In 1979 the bank changed its name to Banco Mexicano Somex. In 1982 banks were nationalized.

The provision for CLABE standardization was issued by the Asociación de Bancos de México (ABM) (Mexican Bank Association) in conjunction with the Banco de México (Mexico's Central Bank). It ensures that the inter-bank fund transfers, payroll deposits, or automatic service charges are made to the correct accounts.
In 1976 it acquired First National Bank of Puerto Rico, and in 1982 Banco Español-Chile. In 1986, Emilio's oldest son, Emilio Botin-Sanz de Sautuola y García de los Ríos, succeeded him.
