Lepidolite is a lilac-gray or rose-colored member of the mica group of minerals with chemical formula K(Li,Al) 3 (Al,Si,Rb) 4 O 10 (F,OH) 2. [ 2 ] [ 3 ] It is the most abundant lithium -bearing mineral [ 4 ] and is a secondary source of this metal.
The crystal structure of mica is described as TOT-c, meaning that it is composed of parallel TOT layers weakly bonded to each other by cations (c). The TOT layers in turn consist of two tetrahedral sheets ( T ) strongly bonded to the two faces of a single octahedral sheet ( O ).

Rubidium was discovered in 1861 by Robert Bunsen and Gustav Kirchhoff, in Heidelberg, Germany, in the mineral lepidolite through flame spectroscopy. Because of the bright red lines in its emission spectrum, they chose a name derived from the Latin word rubidus, meaning "deep red". [39] [40] Rubidium is a minor component in lepidolite.

Petalite is an important ore of lithium, and is converted to spodumene and quartz by heating to ~500 °C and under 3 kbar of pressure in the presence of a dense hydrous alkali borosilicate fluid with a minor carbonate component.
