Village Inn was founded by James Mola and Merton Anderson, who opened the first Village Inn Pancake House in Denver in 1958 at 8855 East Colfax Avenue. Fruitport sits at the upstream end of Spring Lake, connected to Lake Michigan via the Grand River at Grand Haven. According to the U.S. Census Bureau , the village has a total area of 1.02 square miles (2.64 km 2 ), of which 0.91 square miles (2.36 km 2 ) are land and 0.11 square miles (0.28 km 2 ), or 10.8%, are water.
The village is in northwestern Manistee County on the south shore of a lake with the same name. U.S. Route 31 passes through the west and north sides of the village, leading southwest 17 miles (27 km) to Manistee, the county seat, and north 14 miles (23 km) to Benzonia.
