The original Athens High School was a charter member of the Southeastern Ohio Athletic League (SEOAL) in 1925. The consolidated high school also competed in the SEOAL from 1967-2008. The Athens 1925 football team was the first Bulldog team to win SEOAL championship and the 2008 wrestling and tennis teams were the last sports teams to win the SEOAL.

State Route 690 (SR 690) is a north–south state highway in southeastern Ohio, a U.S. state. The southern terminus of SR 690 is at the concurrency of US 50 and SR 32 about 6 + 1 ⁄ 2 miles (10.5 km) east of Athens in the community of Canaanville. Its northern terminus is at SR 550 approximately two miles (3.2 km) west of Amesville.
