It is the principal city of the Kalamazoo–Portage metropolitan area in southwestern Michigan, which had a population of 261,670 in 2020.
The initial, 1-1/2 acre portion of the Maple Grove Cemetery was leased from Charles Noble of Monroe, Michigan in 1844. An addition was made and formally platted by Isaac B. Woodhouse, a Mason businessman, in 1873. Several additions were made to the cemetery's acreage in the nineteenth century. The name was changed to "Maple Grove Cemetery" in 1897.
Pine Grove Mills is a small settlement about a mile east of Gobles. It was platted February 4, 1870, receiving a post office in 1857 with David D. Wise as postmaster. Now a private residence, the post office still stands today. The railroad extension from Kalamazoo reached Pine Grove Mills on January 10, 1870.
