The Melka Wakena Power Station is a hydroelectric power plant of the Wabe Shebelle River in Ethiopia. [1] The Melka Wakena Power Station was built in 1988 over an active archeological site.
The power station lies across the Ganale Doria River, along the border of Kobadi Woreda and Meda Welabu Woreda, in the Bale Zone of the Oromia Region of Ethiopia. This is approximately 610 kilometres (379 mi) by road, southeast of Addis Ababa , the largest city and capital of Ethiopia. [ 3 ]
InfraCo Africa, Ethiopian Electric Power and the Government of Ethiopia agreed on a power purchase agreement (PPA) in 2017. [1] In 2020, that PPA was amended to include a clause for the 25-year duration and specification that the developers will operate and maintain the power station for the entire duration of the PPA.
There are no plans in Ethiopia to exploit them and to use them for energy generation. The last time there were plans, in 2006, a 100 MW coal power plant (the Yayu coal power plant) with a nearby coal mine was under consideration. Due to severe environmental concerns all plans were stopped and cancelled in September 2006.
