For the past month I have been looking into selling the Ranger to buy another (my third), but I have run into several problems lately. A few weeks ago the engine just sputtered and died while driving down the road (luckily I was just .5 mile from the house and had a friend tow me home).

First, my alternator reading on the dash guage went to "L" and the battery light turned on. OK, checked the battery and with the engine running, was getting 12.4V. No evidence of being charged by the alternator.
We jumped it with my GMC. The cable had to be on all the terminals to start. Couldn't ground on frames. It started up. When i pulled the cable off the ranger, it immediately started to pulsate. The daytime light pulsed and the engine pulsed like the ac clutch was kicking on and off. [a/c was off] Help please. Like I said new battery... Thanks.-----
It only clicks, once. If i hold the key it often eventually starts up, or if I wait a few minutes. Battery giving me 12v and 14.2v while idling. My best guess is the wiring between the starter and battery, about 5 years ago had some corrosion issues and spliced in new wiring. Any other suggestions or help would be appreciated. _____

2004 2.3L won't turn over but battery and connections good When I turn the key to start the engine, there is a fairly rapid (about 6 times/second) sound that coincides with the dashboard lights blinking at the same pace.

Re: 11.64 volts on a car battery means... its definitely dead, it may not be junk, cant know for sure until you jumpstart it and check charging voltage at battery terminals. if it is not in the area of 14 volts then the charging system is messed up somehow. whether it be connections or cables. if it is at 14.something, most likely ...
