The Little Sioux River is a river in the United States. It rises in southwestern Minnesota near the Iowa border, and continues to flow southwest for 258 miles (415 km) [1] across northwest Iowa into the Missouri River at Little Sioux. The Little Sioux River was known as Eaneah-waudepon or "Stone River" to the Sioux Indians.
The West Fork of the Little Sioux River is a river in the northwestern Iowa, United States. It is a tributary to the Little Sioux River through the Garretson Outlet Ditch within the Missouri River floodplain which it enters at 42°09′44″N 96°05′50″W / 42.16222°N 96.09722°W / 42.16222; -96.
It is joined by the Minnesota River at Fort Snelling, by the St. Croix River near Hastings, by the Chippewa River at Wabasha, and by many smaller streams. The Red River , in the bed of glacial Lake Agassiz , drains the northwest part of the state northward toward Canada's Hudson Bay .
The Ocheyedan River is a tributary of the Little Sioux River, 58 mi (93 km) long, in southwestern Minnesota and northwestern Iowa in the United States. Via the Little Sioux and Missouri Rivers, it is part of the watershed of the Mississippi River. The river has been channelized for much of its length. [2] [3] [4]
The Little Sioux River crested at 30.7 feet at 9 p.m. Monday in Correctionville, about 1.5 feet above the record, according to the National Water Prediction Service. It was at 29 feet Tuesday morning.
Other rivers over 200 miles long include the Red River of the North, Des Moines River, Cedar River, Wapsipinicon River, Little Sioux River, and Roseau River. [1] [2] Sections of several of the longest rivers define sections of the Minnesota border. [3] The Red River of the North forms the border with North Dakota to the west.
