As sky surveys improve, smaller and smaller asteroids are regularly being discovered. The small near-Earth asteroids 2008 TC 3 , 2014 AA , 2018 LA , 2019 MO , 2022 EB 5 , 2022 WJ 1 , 2023 CX 1 , 2024 BX 1 , 2024 RW 1 , 2024 UQ , and 2024 XA 1 are the only elevem asteroids discovered before impacting into Earth (see asteroid impact prediction ).
This is a list of asteroids that have impacted Earth after discovery and orbit calculation that predicted the impact in advance. As of December 2024 [update] , all of the asteroids with predicted impacts were under 5 m (16 ft) in size that were discovered just hours before impact, and burned up in the atmosphere as meteors .
Throughout recorded history, hundreds of Earth impacts (and meteor air bursts) have been reported, with some very small fraction causing deaths, injuries, property damage, or other significant localised consequences. [8] Stony asteroids with a diameter of 4 meters (13 ft) enter Earth's atmosphere approximately once per year. [9]

Here's what to know about Apophis and how space agencies hope to protect Earth from other asteroids like it. Apophis to make 2029 flyby to Earth Apophis is projected to pass within 20,000 miles of ...
An Earth-crosser is a near-Earth asteroid whose orbit crosses that of Earth as observed from the ecliptic pole of Earth's orbit. [1] The known numbered Earth-crossers are listed here. Those Earth-crossers whose semi-major axes are smaller than Earth's are Aten asteroids; the remaining ones are Apollo asteroids. (See also the Amor asteroids.)
The reality about menacing asteroids coming to destroy Earth in the modern-day is ... Astronomers have already found over 90 percent of the half-mile-plus "planet-killer" asteroids that at times ...
The largest asteroid to pass within 1 LD of Earth in 2022 was 2022 TM 2 with an estimated diameter of around 39 meters for an absolute magnitude of 25.2. The fastest asteroid to pass within 1 LD of Earth in 2022 was 2022 YW 6 that passed Earth with a velocity with respect to Earth of 29.8 km/s (67,000 mph). [2] [note 1]
