At least 51 species of box jellyfish were known as of 2018. [5] These are grouped into two orders and eight families. [6] A few new species have since been described, and it is likely that additional undescribed species remain. [7] [8] [9] Cubozoa represents the smallest cnidarian class with approximately 50 species. [10] [better source needed ...

Although the Scyphozoa were formerly considered to include the animals now referred to as the classes Cubozoa and Staurozoa, they now include just three extant orders (two of which are in Discomedusae, a subclass of Scyphozoa). [11] [12] About 200 extant species are recognized at present, but the true diversity is likely to be at least 400 ...
Medusozoa includes the classes Staurozoa, Cubozoa, Scyphozoa and Hydrozoa, but the relationships between these are unclear. Analysis using ribosomal RNA subunits suggests that within Medusozoa, Staurozoa was the first group to diverge, with Cubozoa and Scyphozoa forming a clade, a sister group to Hydrozoa.

Carybdea marsupialis was once considered a widespread species found in warm oceans around the world. [5] It is the only box jellyfish in this sea. [6]
