David Ruffin (born Davis Eli Ruffin; [1] January 18, 1941 – June 1, 1991) was an American soul singer most famous for his work as one of the lead singers of the Temptations (1964–1968) during the group's "Classic Five" period as it was later known.

Most of the songs were recorded during the group's "Classic 5" era with David Ruffin and Eddie Kendricks as lead singers, although there are some tracks present which were recorded with Ruffin's predecessor, Elbridge Bryant, in the lineup. There's also one track that was recorded with Ruffin's successor, Dennis Edwards.
The other members slowly became irritated and annoyed with Ruffin's behavior. Following Motown's decision to rechristen The Supremes as Diana Ross & The Supremes and Martha & the Vandellas as Martha Reeves & the Vandellas, Ruffin felt entitled to the same treatment, and demanded that his group be renamed as well to David Ruffin & The Temptations.

"My Whole World Ended (The Moment You Left Me)" was the focal point of Ruffin's debut solo LP, My Whole World Ended. It peaked at number nine on the Billboard Hot 100 and number two on the Billboard R&B Singles chart. [2] Only one more of Ruffin's solo singles, 1975's Walk Away from Love, would match its success.

"Walk Away from Love" was Ruffin's only number-one R&B hit, and only one of two Top 10 pop hits for Ruffin on the Billboard Hot 100, the other being "My Whole World Ended (The Moment You Left Me)", which also peaked at #9. [2] The song was his only solo entry into the UK charts, where it was a top ten hit as well, and peaked at #10 in early 1976.
