The university merged with Monash University's Gippsland (Churchill) campus in 2013, [12] [13] and the merged schools are now the Federation University Australia. [ 14 ] [ 15 ] The name change was made as the result of the passage of the amended University of Ballarat Act 2010 bill through the state's parliament .
On 6 September 2013, the Victorian Parliament passed legislation to establish Federation University Australia, [16] The name change officially began in 2014. The then Vice-Chancellor justified the name change as an attempt to broaden the reach of the university nationally and internationally, and in fairness to the campuses outside Ballarat. [17]
ACU has seven campuses across Australia: Ballarat, Brisbane, Canberra, Melbourne and Sydney (Blacktown, North Sydney, Strathfield) with a Leadership Centre in Adelaide and another in Townsville. In 2015, the university opened the Rome Centre, a collaboration with the Catholic University of America, located in Rome, Italy. [14]
Federation University has a long history in Ballarat. The product of the amalgamation of the University of Ballarat and the Gippsland Campus of Monash University in 2014, [19] the University has its earliest origins as the Ballarat School of Mines in 1870.
The Gippsland Campus is one of several Federation University Australia campuses in regional Victoria including campuses in Ballarat, Berwick and the Wimmera.It is situated on 63 hectares of landscaped grounds, next to the Strzelecki Ranges. [7]

Mount Helen is the headquarters of Federation University Australia and the Ballarat Technology Park, a campus style office park with tenants including IBM, and a number of state government offices including the State Revenue Office, collectively employing more than 1,400 people.
