Ridgeland is a town in Jasper and Beaufort counties, South Carolina, United States. The population was 3,749 at the 2020 census , [ 5 ] a 7.1% decrease from 2010 . It has been the county seat of Jasper County [ 6 ] since the county's formation in 1912.
South Carolina Highway 170 (SC 170) is a 49.010-mile (78.874 km) state highway, connecting northern Beaufort County with southern portions of Beaufort and Jasper counties. Due to increased population growth in both areas, the majority of the road is four lanes wide, with certain areas retaining the original two-lane configuration.
The highway was established in 1941 or 1942 as a new primary routing from SC 170 to SC 46 in Bluffton, existing entirely in Beaufort County. [4] In 1956, SC 462 ceded some of its routing to SC 46 (Bluffton Road). [5] In 1958, SC 462 was extended north to Coosawhatchie and then west to SC 128 in Gillisonville replacing SC 170. [6]

In 1996-1997, US 278 was rerouted south of Ridgeland to Hardeeville, then east on new primary routing to SC 170, in Bluffton. Its former routing was replaced by SC 336 to Old House and SC 462 to SC 170.
