Voids are immense spaces between galaxy filaments and other large-scale structures. Technically they are not structures. They are vast spaces which contain very few or no galaxies. They are theorized to be caused by quantum fluctuations during the early formation of the universe. A list of the largest voids so far discovered is below.
A Hubble Space Telescope image of the supergiant elliptical galaxy ESO 306-17. Supergiant elliptical galaxies are some of the largest galaxies known. The Condor Galaxy is a colossal spiral galaxy disturbed by the smaller IC 4970 .
This is a radio galaxy. At the time, the most remote object was quasar OQ172, at z=3.53, found in 1974. In 1982, quasar PKS 2000-330 at z=3.78 became the most remote object. 3C 368: 1982: z=1.132 This is a radio galaxy. At the time, the most remote object was quasar OQ172, at z=3.53, found in 1974. [76] 3C 252: 1981–1982: z=1.105 This is a ...
A map of galaxy voids. The structure of the Universe can be broken down into components that can help describe the characteristics of individual regions of the cosmos. These are the main structural components of the cosmic web: Voids – vast, largely spherical [6] regions with very low cosmic mean densities, up to 100 megaparsecs (Mpc) in ...
The Galaxy Gun, a large space station designed to destroy entire planets from across the galaxy could be considered a megastructure because its size is more than seven kilometres long. The Star Forge from Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic. Glavis Ringworld is a ring shaped space station around a star in The Book of Boba Fett.
The spread of velocities for the individual galaxies is about 150 km/s. However, this definition should be used as a guide only, as larger and more massive galaxy systems are sometimes classified as galaxy groups. [4] Groups are the most common structures of galaxies in the universe, comprising at least 50% of the galaxies in the local universe.
The galaxy has a very large halo of much lower intensity "diffuse light" extending to a radius of 600 kpc (2 million ly). [30] [verification needed] The authors of the study identifying the halo conclude that IC 1101 is "possibly one of the largest and most luminous galaxies in the universe". This view has been stated in several other papers as ...
In cosmology, galaxy filaments are the largest known structures in the universe, consisting of walls of galactic superclusters. These massive, thread-like formations can commonly reach 50 to 80 megaparsecs (160 to 260 megalight-years)—with the largest found to date being the Hercules-Corona Borealis Great Wall at around 3 gigaparsecs (9.8 Gly) in length—and form the boundaries between voids ...
