Adjara was a part of Georgian polities, Colchis and Caucasian Iberia, since ancient times. [6] [7] Colonized by Greeks in the 5th century BC, the region fell under Rome in the 2nd century BC.
An Ottoman military camp in Batum during the Crimean War in 1855.. In 1547, the province of Adjara fell to Ottoman raids, leading to the capture of Batumi. In 1564, Prince Rostom Gurieli of Guria managed to liberate the region, but Turkish rule was reestablished in 1582.
After a temporary occupation by Turkish and British troops in 1918–1920, Ajaria was reunited with Georgia in 1920. A brief military conflict in March 1921 prompted the government in Ankara to cede the territory to Georgia as a consequence of Article VI of the Treaty of Kars, with the condition for autonomy to be provided for the Muslim population. The Adjarians (Georgian: აჭარლები, romanized: ach'arlebi) [a], also known as Muslim Georgians, [b] [4] are an ethnographic group of Georgians indigenous to Adjara in southwestern Georgia.
Batumi (/ b ɑː ˈ t uː m i /; Georgian: ბათუმი pronounced ⓘ), historically Batum [3] or Batoum, [4] is the second-largest city of Georgia and the capital of the Autonomous Republic of Adjara, located on the coast of the Black Sea in Georgia's southwest, 20 kilometres (12 mi) north of the border with Turkey.
