Most fibrates can cause mild stomach upset and myopathy (muscle pain with CPK elevations). Fibrates decrease the synthesis of bile acid by down-regulation of cholesterol 7 alpha-hydroxylase and sterol 27-hydroxylase expression, therefore making it easier for cholesterol to precipitate and increasing the risk for gallstones.
Serious side effects may include angioedema, gallstones, liver problems, and muscle breakdown. [3] Use in pregnancy and breastfeeding is of unclear safety. [5] It belongs to the fibrates group of medications and works by decreasing the breakdown of lipids in fat cells. [3] Gemfibrozil was patented in 1968, and came into medical use in 1982. [6]
Fenofibrate (sold under the brand name Tricor among others), is an oral medication of the fibrate class used to treat abnormal blood lipid levels. [3] It is less commonly used compared to statins because it treats a different type of cholesterol abnormality to statins.
This condition of bile acid malabsorption occurs after surgery to the ileum, in Crohn's disease, with a number of other gastrointestinal causes, or is commonly a primary, idiopathic condition. The SeHCAT test can be used for diagnosis. Bile salt diarrhea can also be a side-effect of gallbladder removal. [1]
One of the many lipid lowering effects of the fibrate drug class is mediated through the inhibition of transcription of this enzyme. [17] This inhibition leads to more cholesterol in the bile, which is the body's only route of cholesterol excretion. This also increases the risk of cholesterol gallstone formation.
If one or more gallstones block the bile ducts and cause bilirubin to leak into the bloodstream and surrounding tissue, jaundice and itching may also occur. In this case, liver enzyme levels are likely to be raised. [16] Often, gallbladder attacks occur after eating a heavy meal. Attacks are most common in the evening or at night. [17]
Toby Fischer lives in South Dakota, where just 27 doctors are certified to prescribe buprenorphine -- a medication that blunts the symptoms of withdrawal from heroin and opioid painkillers. A Huffington Post analysis of government data found nearly half of all counties in America don't have such a certified physician. So every month, Fischer and his mother drive to Colorado to pick up their ...
The most common cause of bile duct obstruction is when gallstone(s) are dislodged from the gallbladder into the cystic duct or common bile duct resulting in a blockage. A blockage of the gallbladder or cystic duct may cause cholecystitis. If the blockage is beyond the confluence of the pancreatic duct, this may cause gallstone pancreatitis.
