The Chrysler A engine is an OHV small-block V8 gasoline engine built by Chrysler from 1956 until 1967. It featured polyspherical combustion chambers , and was offered in displacements from 276.1 cu in (4.5 L) to 325.2 cu in (5.3 L), and in various high-power configurations.
In the mid-1960s, Chrysler decided to adapt the 318 cu in (5.2 L) small block V8 into a lightweight, high output engine equally suited for drag strip or street performance use. Its block was bored out to 4.04 in (102.6 mm) but its 3.31 in (84.1 mm) stroke left unchanged, resulting in the 340 cu in (5.6 L) engine introduced for the 1968 model year.
The Polyspheric or Poly engines were V8 engines produced by Chrysler from 1955 to 1958 as lower-cost alternatives to the Hemi engines. [1] These engines were based on the Hemi engines, using the same blocks and crankshaft parts, but completely different cylinder heads , pushrods, exhaust manifolds and pistons.
It is not the same as Chrysler's 360 V8. [4] Chrysler continued production of the AMC 360 engine after the 1987 buyout of AMC to power the full-size Jeep Wagoneer (SJ) SUV that was produced until 1991. [5] It was one of the last carbureted car/truck engines built in North America. [6] Chrysler never used this engine in any other vehicle.
The 440 was rated at 375 bhp (280 kW) with a single 4-barrel carburetor. The 318 two-barrel "LA" Chrysler LA engine was now standard, but with wedge-shaped combustion chambers, unlike the previous 1966 polyspherical (or "poly") design, rated at 230 bhp (170 kW). The 383 4-barrel was rated at 325 bhp (242 kW) and the 426 Street Hemi at 425 bhp ...
The 400 cu in (6.6 L) B engine was introduced in 1972 to replace the venerable 383, and were power-rated via the net (installed) method. Chrysler increased the bore size of the 383 to create the 400. Its bore of 4.342-inch (110.3 mm) was the largest used in any production Chrysler V8 at the date of its introduction.

A narrower range of engines was offered: the base power plant was the 225 cu in (3.7 L) slant-6, now with top-fed hydraulic tappets, and the 318 cu in (5.2 L) and 360 cu in (5.9 L) LA-series V8s. The slant-6 was replaced by the 3.9 L (237 cu in) V6 for 1988; in 1992, it and the V8s became Magnum engines.
